What SPF and broad-spectrum coverage mean
SPF describes a product's protection against UVB rays under the test conditions used for its label. “Broad spectrum” indicates that the product also meets the labeled test for UVA protection. Neither label tells you how much product you will apply or how much time you personally should spend outdoors. Read the product directions rather than treating a higher SPF number as permission to stay outside longer.

Compare the label, not the container
Check these details before choosing a product:
- Broad-spectrum coverage: check that the label says broad spectrum.
- SPF: the AAD recommends SPF 30 or higher.
- Water resistance: if you will be outdoors, check whether the product is labeled water resistant and follow its directions.
- Use and reapplication directions: follow the specific product label. AAD guidance says to reapply when outdoors every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
- Fit for your routine: a moisturizer with sunscreen may combine two steps. Choose a texture and formulation you can use as directed; do not assume every combined product or sunscreen works the same way.
